This Is Not Aberystwyth

It's raining, here in Texas, and that's about as far as the similarity to Wales' notorious seaside resort, Aberystwyth, goes.

A Typical Aberystwyth Street Scene

After Morning Prayer the power went out, so I took the dog for a recce patrol. I also took a pistol along for security, in case things got out of hand with the grid being down.

Texas

In Aberystwyth that'd be illegal, because you can always call the police when you're being attacked by Welsh seaside rowdies.

A Bright Cheery Morning in Aberystwyth

The power's on, now, and we'll see how long that lasts. Smart people are building cisterns to hold the rainwater because, at some point, the electricity may not come back on again.

Off Grid,

I was in the pool this afternoon until the rain started, like an old reptile, basking. It was announced by VERY CLOSE lightning and immediate thunder cracks like two old wooden frigates going at each other - broadside after broadside. Followed shortly by about two inches of water in fifteen minutes. It felt like Thailand. But I was still in the People's Republik of Kaliforniastan.

P. S. The red-top Optima battery gave up the ghost in my Toyota FJ and was still under warranty so I dropped it off and picked up a new one. I like driving in flash flood-type conditions in the FJ because it feels like being in a tank.

I didn't take my Glock. I settled for my .45 Kimber Raptor.

PSS - I have a dual battery set up in the FJ, so I started it on the reserve and ran to the store that way. There are two types of people: Prepared and unprepared.

Flash flood driving can be fun, and I'm jealous of the pool and the Kimber. And for sure, any fool can be unprepared.

Famous last words...

The only thing funnier than this post are these comments. I'm proud to know two people who are so prepared for the apocalypse!

Can one be prepared without a pool, a raptor, and a kimber.

Brighid, that's very reminiscent of Kipling, "A man can never have too much red wine, books, or ammunition."

Padre, good to bring along Blue Ranger for the recon of your AO. Never know when a dog biscuit might jump out from ambush.

No, Brig, one cannot be. ;^)

In Aberystwyth the apocalypse occurred in 1985. Problem is nobody noticed.

I must up my preparedness, Brighid...

He's a handy dog, Mattexian.

It's like that famous book, Anonymous, "1985".
