I went shopping for an axe, and found one, it was rusty and beat up.

Good job, LSP. The best thing to clean up rust and whatnot is Barkeepers Friend. It's available at Walmart. Wonderful product. Google it...

I don't see any markings, but it certainly looks like a Kutter...
Ah, that's a roofing hatchet. Notice the notch for pulling nails and the hammer head opposite the cutting edge.
to me it looks like a roofer's hatchet. still a handle blade for multipurpose use.
