Always have mixed feelings about the Civil War. My ancestors were all blue bellied Yankees. One was a distinguished officer in the Iron Brigade (Wisconsin volunteers). Another was in the Colorado militia at the battle of Glorita Pass, NM. Bottom line for me was many died on behalf of the moneyed classes on both sides.
And there in the background, under the glare of General Lee, is the...Union Jack.
This was to be the advancement of those ideals and principles that were fought for and gained in the War of Independence. A completing of the victories won. And the Leviathan of tyranny that was defeated in 1776 was to be fought against again in the War for Southern Independence.

And it is the railings and machinations of an utterly and completely defeated foe.
True independence has been won as Our Lord is enthroned in the Court of His Father!
My family, not all direct ancestors but related, fought on both sides. A total waste, brought on mainly by the hubris of southern politicians (who thought that influence in Washington, D.C. would somehow translate into victory on the battlefield). Reconstruction, as bad as it was, was not the worst outcome. The concept of an all providing central government - the seed of tyranny - was planted by the northern "victory". The union was saved, but freedom was not.

I think some of my dad's people may have been WV, either that or the Milwaukee Regiment(?). My Mother's family were Oklahoma/Texas and I'm not sure of their involvement in that hideous war.
Me? States Rights No Tyranny sounds pretty appropriate right about now. That in mind, I like Anon's comment and LL's stirring call to action!
