Going To A Gun Shop

Deadly assault rifles are a lot of fun, no doubt about it but they have their problems. They get dirty, just for a start, and then there's all these bits that keep the beasts together. Like the firing pin retaining pin.

Broken, Useless

Lose that bit and you're in trouble, the same holds if the annoying thing breaks, which is exactly what happened to one of mine. There it was, a broken pin. Useless.

Fun Guns is Fun

To put it right I drove to Fun Guns in Waco instead of ordering the part on the information superhighway. Partly because I didn't want to wait and also because I figured it'd be fun to go to a store that wasn't Walmart. And Fun Guns is just what it says it is, full of fun guns.

Unbroken, Useful

Pistols, deadly assault rifles in several calibers, a few bolt actions and shotguns, optics, barrels, lower and upper receivers for AR builds, triggers, parts, ammo and all kinds of neat stuff. The people that run it are friendly too and don't have the rude, condescending attitude you meet in some gun shops. I like that.

Back Together Again

So I bought a few pins and a sling swivel, miraculously resisting the strong temptation to buy an S&W .357 Magnum, a new scope and an AK. These things will have to wait. And guess what? The new pin fits like a champ.

Thanks, Fun Guns, you make Waco a better place.

Shoot on,

LSP

I like to keep a few of those pins on hand, just in case. I also have several back up bolt carrier groups. One never knows and it's best to be ready.

Likely you have thought of this already--it's a good a idea to keep a spare bolt assembly handy. Good for when you are in a pinch or in a hurry. Later you can head over to see fun guns at your leisure to replace what broke.

Good idea to get a 'spare parts' kit which has the springs, pins, etc. for any AR... Just sayin... And now I've got someplace to stop the next time I'm down that way!

WSF, I did exactly that.

I have a couple of ARs, Jim, and I figure that adds to redundancy. Saying that, a good spare parts kit's in order -- I bought a few pins today!

Well said, RHT, and I have to say, the defective pin worked for almost 10 years with thousands of rounds put through the weapon. So, well done CMMG (original manufacture) for making a good 'un. Still, they do wear out...

Check 'em out, NFO, I like that shop! They're pretty much AR foscused and seem to have gone a bit top end but I like that. Prices are realistic, imo.

I think that it's just as important to have a spare parts inventory for those firearms you cherish as it is to have an inexhaustible supply of ammunition. And a fun gun store is every bit as cool as one of those old time hardware stores (not the chain stores) where you had old men working who actually knew what you needed and could find a box on a dusty shelf containing the solution.

Can't go wrong with a good gun shop. :)

I like those old time hardware shops a lot, LL. Some of them, the best ones, sell guns too and that's a right bonus. There's one in West, down the road from the Compound, which ALWAYS had a ready supply of ammo during the harsh socialist scarcities of the miserable Obama years. So you'd go there and an old man would find your box and then point you to some helpful ammo, or a gun.

Speaking of which, the AR parts box is pretty full -- triggers, handguards, various pins and springs etc but lacked that one bit. Lesson? Don't assume and... attention to detail. Sorted now.

Linda, I totally agree and this is a fun one, no doubt about it. A bit pricey perhaps but they sell good kit, so.
