Smoke That Skeet

Someone once said, famously, Speed is fine. Accuracy is final, and skeet shooting's a bit of both, not that I'm any kind of expert. The orange bird zips out fast and you have to be on to get it. A typically quick, accurate, snap shot.

And how good when you connect and smoke the clay challenger. There's something especially satisfying about hitting that small moving target and watching it dust off. Big fun, but here's the thing, readers.

You may think, because shotgun, that pointing in the general direction and letting loose is going to work, street sweeper style. Think again. It helps to aim. Seriously. Don't forget, in the shotgunnery excitement of all, to aim.  Put that bead on the bottom edge of the clay, "popsicle" it, and squeeze the trigger. A fast movement for sure, but an accurate one.

But what am I saying. All you competition shooters out there have forgotten more about the sport than I will ever know. Regardless, the misnomered White Flyers took a right beating today, not least from the kid. Great result.

Then, after a headshot plinkathon against small steel at 150 yards, .22 WMR, we headed back to base. And what a good day out in the country with guns, just sheer enjoyment. Thanks, CR, for the invite. And now?

Pork chops, Yorkshire Pudding(!), roast potatoes and all the rest. A delicious end to a great day's shoot. It's raining too, another plus. Thank you, Climate Change.

Your Pal,

LSP

I prefer the commercial skeet and trap ranges to flingers, but that may be the preferences for more orderly flight and longer flights. I hope that doesn't make me seem like a snob.

The last time that I went to the range, I scored admirably with my Browning Lightning. I've thought of building a commercial shotgun range near the WWM. I'm sure that I'd shoot up the profits. But that would be cool too.

Not snobby at all, LL. I use flingers because they're easy and, to be fair, they work. Some say they're better because they're more random, and maybe that's true. Browning Lightning? Nice. I'm tempted towards a used Silver Pigeon, but of course the sky's the limit.

A commercial range would be fun. Boom, right up there in the highlands.

If I learned anything in all the shotgun training I've had, it's that you AIM a shotgun! You aim it a bit differently than a rifle, but you have to AIM it. It's NOT a Cone Of Death Projector like in da moviez....

And you have to keep it fed if you're in a firefight, so get good at feeding it. Blindfolded and off-hand.

I've shot at clay pigeons once, at the Angeles Shooting Ranges, where the LAPD practices. I got 10 out of 10, put the gun down, action open, and that was it. I'll probably never duplicate that again....

Glad you and your son had a great time. Nothing beats going to the range (well, maybe fishing does...) for quality father/son time.

Hope the 20 performed well and the double triggers aren't too much of a hassle for those quick shots. I found it quite easy to slide back to the rear trigger but that's me. So glad it's back and doing its job.

Wyatt Earp was the one who done said accuracy is final.

Mr Bond says Skeet Shooting is not very difficult.

I didn't grow up around shotguns and my parents never owned one. Friends took me pheasant hunting once and loaned me a single shot 20 gauge. Saw a pheasant running and shot it. Friends were appaled! Big lecture about shooting them as they flew. End of that day we collectively had one pheasant in the game bag. Oh well. That is nearly the sum total of my shotgun experience.

10 out of 10, nice work, drjim, and right outta the gate. It usually takes me a few warm ups... and don't forget to AIM. Iportant.

A great little gun, T, and the double triggers are fine. I like their old school aspect :)

I came late to shotguns, WSF, but enjoy them. And hey, you shot dinner.
