Yay! Dixie...

I can't hear that song without remembering being in a music venue (bar) when I first moved to Houston. The band struck up Dixie and everyone stood up. Little Minnesota girl here remained seated in complete mystification as to why everyone was standing. Within a few seconds someone punched me in the arm and motioned for me to stand up - stat! Never made that mistake again and soon came to understand why I was standing and was proud to do so.

And yet, all for naught, states' rights were lost.

Dixie and Bonnie Blue Flag are great tunes. Even Lincoln was a fan of "Dixie" - when a band serenaded him in the White House at the end of the Civil War, he asked the musicians to play "Dixie" saying, "I have always thought 'Dixie' one of the best tunes I have ever heard. Our adversaries over the way attempted to appropriate it, but I insisted yesterday that we fairly captured it…I now request the band to favor me with its performance." Unfortunately I don't think the current mob would see it in that vein which is too bad. It's a damn catchy tune. And written in NYC to boot!

It's just the Lost Cause that I have a problem with.

Stand up! Can't not stand for Dixie. I was moved by that, Adrienne. Off topic, but have you been posting? I keep checking but keep seeing the excellent DO YOU GET IT YET!!!

PS. I think I like Jackson's in the Valley best :)

Aye, z.

They were brave and paid for it. I ask myself how it fits into the scheme of Providence.

Thanks for that, T. I didn't, or more likely forgot, the Lincoln thing.

BTW, love the CZ.

If it's good enough for Lincoln. Couple thoughts....

Someone pointed out that slavery would have collapsed on its own soon without the Civil War. I think that's true.
We should have let the democrats have the South. They would have collapsed under their own weight also.
Therefore, I propose AOC for president with Hank Johnson as VP.

I was part of a Carnival ball in NOLA that, per tradition, played Dixie as part of the opening ceremonies. When the City Council demanded that all Carnival krewes submit a list of their members or they would not be allowed to parade, this Krewe gave the instigator, Dorothy Mae Taylor, the royal finger and shut down. While NOLA claims that parades cost them money in terms of police overtime and cleanup, the tourist dollars more than make up for it. If only more krewes had joined them it might have made the City Council sing Dixie. Now they want to put her statue where R.E. Lee once stood with his face to the North.
