Vicarious Hunting

GWB's new dog, Jeb & ducks

One of the reasons there hasn't been any hunting posts on this blog for far too long is that I haven't been out hunting. Riding? Yes. Shooting? Yes, but not as much as I'd like, mostly .22 plinking, to be honest.

But I can live vicariously through my linguistic philosopher friend GWB, who made good use of duck season to get out in the field with his new dog Jeb and a cheap but cheerful Mossberg 12 pump action ($150 from Academy).

Good duck result, GWB! Inspired now to get out and hunt once the weather clears.

Speaking of hunting, check out Whitetail Woods - Rick's excellent blog.

"Cheap but cheerful." I like that.

Thanks Bluesun - the price is certainly right... They shoot well enough too.

Nothing wrong with cheap, especially if it's a Mossberg. I have had a Maverick (bottom of Mossberg line) for years.

My son started shooting it and was busting clays like crazy with it. He also shot two pheasants on his first outing with it, so I decided to give it to him.

My Dad then turned around and bought me a Remington 870 express, another cheap end of the line gun. The innards are the same, but the finish is matte and you don't get the nice walnut stock. Fine with me, I'd hate dragging a thousand dollar gun through the brush...

Congrats to your son, Silverfiddle! A friend of mine just got a Maverick - struck me as very good value for money. The 870's good too; I've been meaning to get one for awhile but haven't gotten around to it. Then there's always an FN FAL which seems extremely tempting...

Thanks Toyin - it motivated me to get out in the field more often.

God bless.
