Ride On?

Shadow LSP

Perhaps it's time to get back on the horse. I mean to say, there you are at the dear old Tolly in Calcutta and decide to go for a morning ride. So put on those burnished field boots, stroll over to the stables, swing into the saddle and... make a complete fool of yourself because you haven't actually ridden in a few years, four, to be precise.

The Tolly, I Think It's Time to Visit

All wrong. No, none of that. Instead you mount up and ride on into the dawn of a new Bengal day, moving from walk, to trot, to canter, to gallop, all seamlessly and in union with the horse itself. Man and beast at one. OK, so you have a warm up in the arena first to get to know the horse, but that's all good and your Syce suspends his inclination to scorn a new rider. Ride over, you fall back to the veranda for refreshments, the day is young.

Now you see where I'm going with this. If you want to go on a tour of the Clubs of the Old Raj, you'd better be able to ride. That in mind, the Lenten fast is moving me to call up the Senior Warden and ask, "I say, J, d'ye know someone who can sort me out for remedial lessons, English style?"

Me a Few Year's Back at J's Arena With The Youngest

She'll say yes and we can go from there, maybe to a half lease, and even if the Tolly plan, magnificent in scope, doesn't work out it's still way better than a gym membership. So let's see how this equestrian plan pans out. In the meanwhile, here's J in the day:

Just Outstanding

What an athlete! Her husband was too, RIP, a world champ Bronc Rider and MC/Treasurer at Mission #2 to boot. But rodeo aside, I feel that it'd be good to get in the saddle again and actually learn the discipline. Or something like that.

Horsing Around

Some of my parishioners are afraid I'll come off the horse(s) and die. "Don't go so fast, Padre!" they say. They are serious horse people.

Parishioner

I reply, "Don't worry, if things get tippy I'll just hold onto the pommel thing."

"Saddle horn," they reply.

Grace Slick

Walk, trot, canter, gallop, run!

Happy Father's Day!

I hope you've all had a great Father's Day and a blessed Feast of the Holy Trinity. I have a good mind to fire up the grill in honor of both.

Baptized a baby this morning. Beautiful.

Country Ministry

On the Road

I used to think that country ministry meant looking after several near empty Medieval churches and lots of parish "fetes." Perhaps you don't know what a parish fete is. They're mostly like day-long yard sales with little sandwiches, snacks and tea, maybe even some goofy game that the priest is supposed to take part in.

Bad Craziness

Sometimes they'll have dancers who are like clowns but worse, and if the fete's high-stepping it might have tents, which is a good idea because these things are held outside and chances are it'll rain. That's what I figured rural priesthood was about, all these fetes and ancient churches, maybe even some real ale clowns.

Rod and Gun

Apparently I was wrong. For me, country ministry seems to involve a lot of guns, horses, fishing and not a Norman church in sight, sadly. It also means plenty of driving to take the Sacrament to the sick.

Mischief

I pulled up at one place today, where a church lady had been knocked down by an animal, a four legged one, fortunately. A big black dog was padding about with a calf's leg in its mouth, right content, unlike the calf's owner, who wasn't.

And that, my friends, is just the way it is.

God bless,

Country Life, Horsing About

I love Texas

There's been a bit here about God, guns and church but not much  about country life. Lately that mostly means climbing into the pickup and driving off to ride JB. I've been careful on her, not asking for too much all at once, because she hadn't been ridden for a awhile.

rocky paths

So we've been practicing the slower gaits, walk, trot. Fine, I thought, she's doing well enough at those, nicely cadenced, attentive, I'll ask for a canter. Nothing that JB hadn't done many hundreds of times before. Easy. No. Not easy.

bad mischief

The horse decided that was a perfect opportunity to perform a neat sideways up in the air buck. I stayed on, fortunately, and she was very nearly sent back from whence she came, harming no one... Happily for all concerned, the animal redeemed herself the following week with a decent controlled canter; I must start galloping her again. A whole lot of fun and fast as you like.

Norma's Car Park. Result!

Still, bearing in mind the time I have to ride, I'd like a horse that wasn't such a project animal and it'd be good to have another creature in case anyone else wanted to ride. Two's company, sort of thing. Maybe a Foundation Quarter Horse gelding? Trained for trails? Well, we'll see.

nice shades, LSP

In the meanwhile, here's one of my parishioners riding her horse Randy around a barrel. Verdict? Outstanding.

TM on Randy, outstanding

I've been fortunate enough to ride Randy in the arena and fear I charged about foolishly. Beautiful horse and a joy to ride.

Ride on,
