Units defending Berlin against Red Communists in 1945 were more numerous SS divisions from Western Europe, rather than German. The non-Germans had more to lose.

And also terrifying, NFO, at least that's my take. On the micro level it seems as though the MSM's been given the order to greenlight/ignore the Nazi thing, which speaks all kinds of volumes. To say nothing of anything else. Like what, German Greens braying for war? Far out.
For them, Sgt., tragically true. Wasn't it Flemish SS who held out around the Reichstag until the total end? Something like that. But the combat reports I was thinking of were Leibstandarte (I think). I don't sympathize with their cause but wow, harrowing reading and all the more so for being clinical. As in, "Command post of xxx hit by artillery fire at 1400, Major x killed, Captain y killed, Lieutenant z assumed command. Unit retreated to woods at... lost 45% of strength, entrenched under heavy fire..." etc.
I was taken aback. What a slaughterhouse. It seems the powers which drive us, and notoriously don't fight at the front, have forgotten this lesson. Don't get me wrong, I'm no pacifist, but still.
