The Air War

B1s

B2s

B52s, no less.

And B17s

Wow, maybe it's almost time to unleash a few B17s, just for kicks. And here's a thought, maybe something like an upgraded P51 would be useful against low tech opposition? Cheap, too, which might be a factor in weeks to come.

Fly on,

LSP

The Super-Tucano is basically an updated P-51. So there's that.

What we need, more than B-17s, really is something like a PBY-5 Catalina or a later version of the PBM-Mariner. Basically, yes, turboprop seaplanes capable of launching long-range missiles or air-dropped mines or torpedoes or bombs. I'd go with an updated Mariner as it was faster, overall better (except for the pesky engine fires... which they fixed) and more comfortable than the Catalina.

And, funny, the US military is looking into Japan's continued use of seaplanes. They've got a big-arsed 4-engine turboprop that has huge range, heavy lift capability and is just a nice plane.

Overall I prefer 'bomb, bomb, bomb' to 'troops on the ground.' Let's hope the Iranian leaders run out of leaders to lead...

No, what we the American people need to recognize that our gov't is OWNED by Satanyahu and his ilk, and all the trouble started when Israel was shoved into place in '48.

I was just yesterday scouring the internet looking at the B1 and all its variants , what a ride that would be , a crew of four ? I'd sit on the floor and make it 5 . That'd be so cool Man . Imagine just cruising through the darkness rippin through the sky , maybe flying low and super fast . ......Be like riding on a giant barn swallow .

The Super-Tucano and such are useful against folks without any form of anti-aircraft systems.

I recall one such aircraft was surprised to be greeted by an old school ZSU-23 antiaircraft gun and the pilot was poorly treated when captured.

Let alone fire and forget MANPADS like Biden issued to the Taliban.

The B-17 worked but more than half were shot down in each raid into Germany.

I prefer we give our air crews the best survival chance when we send them into war.

LSP might be interested in outside of American Media information.

https://coyoteprimeblog2.blogspot.com/2026/03/march-3-no-one-left-to-call.html

Seems the Syria plan is in effect. No negotiation, just reduce Iran into chaos by repeated decapitation strikes and Trump is trying to hire the Kurds (really ISIS rebranded) to fight to capture themselves a homeland.

Head choppers in Syria, Head choppers in Iran.

But who's going to keep those Head choppers from getting uppity like the Taliban and USE that nuclear waste for dirty shut down that city for decades bombs?

We've saddled a Tiger and are riding it for now. Trick is how do you get off and not get eaten by that monster.

I was never a pilot, but three planes I'd love to have flown: B1, B52, and C5

There are two airworthy B29s out there.Just a thought.

If you don't already own the sky, doesn't much matter what you fly. General Cutis Lemay understood this. In his efforts to burn WWII Japan to the ground, he ordered, with the exception of the tail guns, all the gun turrets, gunners, and ammo removed from his B-29's. All that weight was converted to bombs and fuel. They flew at night, at 10,000 feet rather than 25,000, not in formation but staggered out line abeam.

Forget the air war - the periscope video of the Iranian ship getting torpedoed might be one the best things I've seen. I'd love to have been on board for that. Target - mark. Range - mark. Tube 1 - FIRE!

Time to give Wolfpack a listen.

So far semi-confirmed but it seems the "Air War" aka where is Iran's Air Defense is about to change.

Guess General Caines warning to Trump about our ability to maintain the attack was reasonably correct.

Israel for decades has been using extended range boosters to strike targets beyond Air defense envelope. US also. Not so hard to attack when you're firing from other nations airspace.

Seems like the missile interceptor shortages the standoff weapons are also almost depleted.

I'm hearing rumors that military transports are bring in more interceptors and standoff "smart" weapons from the Pacific theater. I'm sure China is vastly amused by that.

Looks like Iron Bombs (mostly leftovers from Vietnam) are on the menu boys.

I hate to think we'll actually test modern Air defense with iron bombs as SNIP The B-2 Spirit bomber officially entered service in April 1997.

BEFORE real time ISR from satellites (that track everything, it seems) and plenty of time for folks to have figured out ways to track them effectively.

It's pretty solid that Trump made an agreement with Iran to bomb useless mountains with those famous Bunker Buster bombs to "Destroy Iran's Nuclear sites" (you know the ones we're "Destroying AGAIN") in trade for Iran shooting up a nicely evacuated American base so both sides could save face and the 12 day beating of Israel would stop per Khomeini's understanding of Shia Islam.

Going to real exciting when more aircraft "fall to Friendly Fire"....

Exactly, Beans, the S Turcano. And yes, SEAPLANES. They'll be useful in the Bosphorus push, eh?

LSP said...

Pat, you've added a needed layer of seriousness to this frivolous airplane post. But all the trouble? I'll resist the urge to travel back in time to Heraclius, Persia and Mohamad.

LSP said...

Boatswain, I 100% agree.

LSP said...

Obviously, M, same here. I guess the thing is, can we fly Turcanos with impunity? Sit developing.

Michael said...

Honestly, NO unless you're using it as crowd control to kill off civilians.

People keep forgetting that "insurgency weapons" like the Tucanos are mostly useful for controlling rioters and ah insurgents... You know the freedom fighter aka patriots.

Military WILL figure out a way to deal with it. The Hind is a nasty old school attack chopper and the Taliban folks learned to lure it into canyons with hidey holes for the "Bait" and then the real ambush fired FROM ABOVE the Chopper and killed it.

There was lots of Arab (read here "Islamic violence") in the area pre 1948. Muslims have been killing Christians since the day Mohammed got touched by Satan.

As to Israel, you do realize that it's the only nation in the area that gives Muslims, Christians, Jews and everyone else the right to vote. And serve in a mixed military. And own shops without paying huge taxes for not being 'the correct religion.' Overall, the 'tyranny of Israel' is like being in Mississippi. While every other country in the area is more like being in coastal California or NYC.

Part of that was due to the severe jet streams over the islands. Precision bombing during the day, even at 1944 levels, was nigh unto impossible thanks to said jet streams. So, well, LeMay embraced total war and Japan burned

If we didn't drop The Bomb, LeMay's plan was to burn and destroy every livable building, wipe out the rail lines, flatten everything AND defoliate all the mountains and hills and farmers' fields. The resulting destruction would have caused massive floods and wiped out pretty much all food sources thus resulting in massive death to the Japanese people. Combined with a total naval blockade, including destroying any floatable object and fishing village, again would have resulted in massive death to the Japanese people.

The only reason to invade would be to hopefully save allied captives and to forestall the USSR from invading and adding more land to their socialist/communist empire.

And we're still issuing Purple Hearts that were minted for the invasion. Still.

Even worse, studies in 1946 showed the Japanese were extremely well prepared and committed to protecting every last centimeter of the nation, from grandparents and old people down to 5 year olds with bombs and sharp sticks. US casualties would have been at least double the projected numbers. And the Japanese would have used chemical and biological weapons.

LeMay was oh so right in his plan. Stand off and burn them to the ground.

The Tucano is designed for low-intensity conflict and counter-insurgency in an environment where a more expensive and faster aircraft would be a waste. Fills the same roll as the A-37 Tweety Bird and the OV-10 Bronco.

It's roll in Operation 'Bring teh Stonk' is to cover areas that aren't covered by anything else. Big empty spaces, already cleared and controlled areas. And some sea warfare. But only in areas where anti-aircraft radar and equipment has been wiped out.

They're great for going after drone-launching trucks though.

LSP said...

M, I applaud your reasoning, but are you really saying we shouldn't deploy ME 262s?!?

LSP said...

Rev Beans, we all love the Turcano. Appropriate name, what?

LSP said...

Thanks for the link, M, sit. developing.

LSP said...

Same, Anon.

And what an excellent thought, Jim.

I know, RHT, that you have paternal skin in the game. Respect.

LSP said...

Beans, some would argue the Japs got off lucky. Whoa.

LSP said...

T, you're ahead of the news or rather I'm well behind. Not sure that Iran has a navy anymore.

LSP said...

M, have you seen the photos of F117s with "photo taken from Canberra"?

Heh.

Some open source material to do google searches:

Not looking good if we cannot figure out how to dismount from the Tiger we saddled.
