Belisarius Interlude

You're all aware of the remarkable late Roman general Flavius Belisarius, but did you know he took out the Italian Goths with around 6000 men? Something like that, which says a lot for professional Roman troops and not much for the wretched Goths.

You'll also recall that Justinian's general routed the Vandals in Spain and associated territories. He evidently recaptured the Standards disastrously lost at Adrianople, which were duly paraded in Constantinople at the last classical triumph. But I won't bang on, here's a song, perhaps too Eastern? Your call:

And what can I say?

Roma Aeterna,

Constantinople/Istanbul - definitely worth a visit

I've never been, Anon, oddly. I do want to see Ἁγία Σοφία but don't know if I could handle the tragedy of it all.

Much of Christian history exists in western Turkey. Unfortunately, Erdogan turned Ayasofia back into a mosque but walking into it when it was a museum was/is a bit awe-inspiring. It may still be open to tourists. Ephesus is nearby as is St John's tomb and Mother Mary's home. Nicaea is located within the city of Iznik and there are too many other sites to list here.

I know, Anon, and I do want to visit. One of my sisters, a Byzantine student, spent time in Istanbul and found it fascinating.
