I’ve enjoyed listening to the channel “Five Romeo Romeo” on YT for Rhodesian stories.
Now I’m going to be logic chopping and bending the meanings of words, as They do continually, but was the ordinary Rhodesian betrayed? Screwed over most definitely, but can one truly be betrayed by someone else who NEVER was on your side nor had your interests at heart? That was probably rhetorical. Few societies would support and even elevate conclaves of beardy, misogynistic men to discuss such points for generations. It selects for certain types down the ages.
Anon, you make a good logic point and I won't argue, "screwed over" seems a better fit. Then again, perhaps the end of the Empire was an exercise in betrayal, on several counts?
Regardless, I recall a Platoon Commander who came from South Africa. He was castigating us one morning for being "white, anemic, but look at me, fit, tan." At which our Platoon Sergeant, a Gloster, grinned and said in his best Sergeant voice, "That's because you're South African, white wog, sir."
