Sanding is required if you don't dare walk across the deck for fear of splinters. Otherwise a good stain/sealer will do.
Though, now that you can see everything, check for bad boards and other 'oh, poop' issues that need to be addressed.
We went with paint, but the dog's nails often leave scratches.
