Living The Dream

Here in the great state of Texas we do not rest, we drive out to country Missions to celebrate the Mass and bring the Body and Blood of Our Lord to the faithful. But we're not the only ones who don't rest, pan to the remarkable Russian conductor Alexey Karabanov.

Karabanov, Director of the Russian Navy's Central Band and the Admiralty's Navy Band, isn't content with such honorifics, he clearly has a purpose, namely to produce and recreate the culture of a gilded age, pre-Bolshevik Russia.

He does so through beautiful, powerful music and bravura 1900s aura. What does this mean? I'm not altogether sure, but Karabanov shows us that it can done, that the hideous ugliness of the way we live now doesn't have to be that way.

Let's be blunt. Our architecture is heinously bad. Our art is nonsensical at best. Our music is a manufactured cacophany. Literature? Show me a Shakespeare or even an Evelyn Waugh or Graham Greene. Philosophy? A hollowed out sham which denies truth and doesn't even stick around for an answer.

Note - They Stand

Karabanov stands against this willful, self-inflicted decline. I respect that and if it can be done in Russia, the removed epicenter of Bolshevism, it can be done here too. Ah, but here's the thing, culture follows on from cult, obviously. You'll note Karabanov is a Christian.

Your's,
