Sunday Wisdom

"He who exalts himself will be humbled," says Christ, and "he who humbles himself will be exalted." To that end I sermonized on pride this morning. Avoid it, dear friends, like the plague it is, the deadliest of deadly sins. Yes indeed, and in that resolve hear this by Austin Farrer:

We never come to God without committing ourselves to him entirely, so far as in us lies, and in the present moment. It seems sometimes to be preached, however, that by a decision once for all made, we can commit ourselves irrevocably. But if this is preached, then it is not true. Today’s decisions cannot tie tomorrow’s hands. What I give to God today, such is my frailty, I may take back or withhold tomorrow. It is through this that God disciplines me, through this that he breaks my pride. The heart is sick and desperately perverse, even the redeemed heart: what it gave God yesterday it takes back today. Our wickedness is so great that we fail to do promised actions, which we had perfectly envisaged at the time of promising. But even if we had the virtue to keep our promise with God when the circumstances are foreseen and unaltered, we should still lack the power to commit ourselves on issues which cannot be perfectly felt or foreseen in advance. He who promises to be chaste, does well and may be perfectly sincere; but he has not by that promise dealt with the temptation he will face when he falls in mutual love with an actual woman, and cannot marry her. Our fences cannot be jumped beforehand, nor our battles won before the enemy appears. You promise fidelity to Christ today, and you are sincere; but it will spare you none of the agony of decision, if a day comes when political brigands hold to our heads the pistol of absolute power, and say, ‘Your religion or your life.’

No, we cannot commit ourselves in a day, because we cannot, merely by saying we will, put our whole trust in God. To trust in God is a thing which has to be learnt. We may stand up and make our profession of faith, clasp a missioner’s hand and say, ‘I have taken Christ for my Savior, I trust him for all.’ But we shall still trust ourselves to do our part in the new covenant we have entered. For we do not learn what dependence on God is, except through having our self-dependence broken in the mill of life, slowly and painfully. Many tears, much shame, continual repentance, this is the lot of those who pledge themselves to God. A paradoxical pledge; we learn to keep it by breaking it. True confessions, bravely and sincerely made to our confessor and absolved with the word of Christ, these are the means by which we learn distrust of ourselves, and trust in God alone. On every such occasion we affirm our self-commital. We bring to life every promise we previously made, back to our confirmation, back to our baptism when others’ lips promised for us, back behind that to the cross, on which Christ committed us to God by dying for us.

Such wisdom, and this stood out, "For we do not learn what dependence on God is, except through having our self-dependence broken in the mill of life, slowly and painfully. Many tears, much shame, continual repentance, this is the lot of those who pledge themselves to God."

We can add: The lot of those who take the lowest place at the marriage feast only to be called, "Friend, come up higher." Higher, to paradise itself.

God bless you all,

Like What?

Pause for a moment and consider the significance. The DHS, right there in the belly of the beast, from the heart of USGOV, urging us to pray without ceasing. Reflect on that, ponder it, what a reversal and unthinkable here up until now. A seismic shift. Europe and the Anglosphere, what was once Christendom, might want to sit up and take notice. Change is apparently coming. You know it's happened before, heathen Rome became Christian.

Dear readers, did you know that demons flee before prayer?

Import Export

Nice Shirt Dude

Look, we're all in favor of fair trade and that's exactly it. Why should the poor citizens of the United States of America have to put up with British import Harry and his simpering LA D-List actress wannabe-but-never-will-be Queen figure? Why, why should we, it's unfair.

Looking Good, Feeling Good until TRUMP

Fortunately the selfless royal couple are attempting to redress this shocking trade imbalance on their own, by self-deporting. Why? Because the evil Orange Dictator insists, like a typical and literal Nazi that his country should and does have an enforceable border. Wow. What. A. Fascist. Such unendurable tyranny for the unelected, fabulously wealthy, privileged, entitled, utterly selfless royal couple. So maybe Harry and Meghan will return to the Sceptered Isle, as an export.

Fierce

Not everyone's happy about this in the UK. A 14 year old Scottish girl was seen protesting with axe and knife. Can you blame her? She's been arrested, we hope, by agents of the Crown.

Savage

Prince Harry was a perfectly good and popular officer in the British Army until he was bewitched by the Californian Simperer-in-Chief. Will the UK have them back? Will the brave young savage girl with axe and knife repel the imports or will Harry and beloved no-talent Meghan set up in England at taxpayer expense?

Stay tuned, and as always, you be the judge,

Let's Calm Down Kids

Wow, what a news cycle, tumultuous, eh? And unrelenting, as though we're accelerating into some new evolution. Perhaps, and let's hope it's a good one. Whatever, calm right down, take a deep breath and enjoy Stardust.

I remember my parents slow dancing to it in Dallas in the '70s when the album came out and everything seemed better. Of course I was a child at the time and everything was magical. It is in my mind today.

Then there's "Kier" Starmer and the Worldwide Anglican Non Communion (WANC). Sorry! Don't get all riled up! No, dear friends, just relax and enjoy Stardust.

What Devilry is This?

You've all heard about 23-year-old transgender man Robin (Robert) Westman who shot up a Catholic school in Minneapolis, killing two and injuring 17 more. Was Robin a victim of the trans cult which fuels the identity politics of the Rainbow Left and lines the pockets of Big Pharma?

He certainly seems to have thought so. "I only keep [the long hair] because it is pretty much my last shred of being trans. I am tired of being trans, I wish I never brain-washed myself," wrote the Robin/Robert trans human hybrid in his bizarre manifesto.

So, victim? I'd argue yes, but surely other forces are at work here beyond the deadly inanity of the Left and its alliance with Mammon. Demons. These want to kill, destroy and maim God's creation, especially children. They're nihilists, see Bolshevikism, and their end or telos is destruction, pure and simple. Far-sighted readers will recall Manasseh in Williams' War in Heaven, "They build, we destroy."

That in mind, let's rebuild Christendom, by the grace of God, and end this utter, satanic iniquity. Know this too, they lose and we win.

Baphomet, you'll recall, is trans,

Free The UK - September 13

Do you think the tide's turning? About dam time. Who knows, maybe JDV will be there on September 13; it'd be a Trumpian moment, do you not think? Regardless, here at the Compound we're endeavoring to entice a rooster to the halcyon timbers of the back deck. C'mon. let's see the Admin on mission to save the UK.

Cheers.

A Short Sunday Reflection

Here's a short Sunday meditation on supernatural inspiration; no small thing. Via Eclectic Orthodoxy:

Supernatural inspiration involves the infusion of knowledge from beyond the upper bounds of natural consciousness. In exploring this idea, Farrer finds it necessary to distinguish supernatural inspiration from “inspired wit” and from “preternatural” consciousness. He explains that “the excellence of the mind consists . . . of a conscious intelligence based always upon acute senses and riding upon a vigorous imagination.” He uses several analogies:

"The previous labour of the intelligence is thrown down into the imagination as into a cauldron, from which it emerges again fused into new figures and, it may be, enriched with materials from the subconscious sphere, which were never in distinct consciousness at all. . . . In inspired wit a spark leaps from intelligence to intelligence across a field of imagination: whereas in weird abnormal consciousness the spark leaps from the outer dark into imagination itself, providing an image of which the intelligence must make what it can. (24-25)"

The infusion of divine knowledge and, surely, being; our Orthodox friends, I think, would call this divinization. Is this not what we're all about as Christians? Strive, my friends, to enter by the narrow door, the strait gate which is Christ Himself. Here endeth the reflection.

God bless,

How Very Awesome

Right on. Let's see more of this, far more, until at last the world can breathe free of rainbow poison and degeneracy. And Georgia Meloni is awesome. At least that's what we think at the Compound, you may not, no rule.

About Bloody Time

Enough

Florida Governor DeSantis has ordered the immediate removal of all rainbow pride propaganda from public facilities and roads, and what can we say? About bloody time. Here's ZeroHedge:

Let's make one thing very clear from the start:  LGBT pride flags are political symbols for a political movement with an undeniable agenda.  They are not "art murals" or expressions of civil rights, they are information weapons designed to saturate the American environment with far-left propaganda.

Woke activists have no right to paint their ideological symbols on taxpayer funded roadways.  No political group has that right.  The fact that progressives and Democrats were allowed to hijack US flagpoles and streets as their own personal indoctrination tools shows just how far America has fallen into the abyss in the past several years.  Luckily, the pendulum is swinging back to center.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has been disinfecting his state and killing the woke mind virus ever since his victory against the attempted coup by Disney in 2023.  Leftists were dumb enough to believe that Florida needed Disney more than Disney needed Florida and the end result was predictable.

Nasty, Degenerate, Dangerous

You can read the whole thing here if you like. While you're at it, earn useful community hours by erasing, painting over and removing loathsome, sinful, degenerate, ugly PRIDE chevrons from the public square. Good heavens, it's ugly enough as it is, don't you think? Aesthetics aside, I've had enough, you've had enough, the whole world's had enough. Let's see it gone.

Rainbow fatigue, there it is.

Texas Eagle

Gentlemen and gentlewomen, did you know that there's such a thing as passenger rail between San Antonio and Cleburne, Texas? I didn't until yesterday, but there is, seriously. The train leaves San Antonio at 06.48 and rolls into spiffy little Cleburne at around 13:00, and all for what? The stupidly low price of 20-40$.

This saves me a 6 hour highway slog, there and back, to pick up a member of the team, result. And result for the passenger, 6 hours of blissful train journey through the rolling plains and sylvan mesquite groves of Olde Texas. Nice, I'm jealous.

That in mind, you can take the Texas Eagle to Chicago, which might be interesting, see recip clubs, then take it back to California, behold the desolation, and then back to the safety of Free State Texas. This appeals to me, and it'd appeal a whole lot more if there was an equivalent with an open carriage and opening windows. Perhaps you know what I mean.

As it is, Amtrak has an interesting rail solution, the Texas Eagle. Let's check it out, and while we're at it, why can't America provide us with a convenient, workable, affordable rail solution? It's not as though we're not the richest, most powerful country on the planet, for goodness sake.

So let's see fewer billions sent to transsexual theater groups in Uganda and more money spent on passenger rail. It'd benefit us all, don't you think?

Cheers,

LSP

Operation Raise The Colours - Ongoing

What's this? It doesn't seem as though Operation Raise The Colours has subsided, on the contrary, it's gaining traction as hundreds of UK towns put out more flags. What can I say, keep it coming and watch in bemused bewilderment as the the Statist Left pulls them down.

Good look, guys, pull down all your patriotic flags because RACIST. And that's just it. The Islamo-Marxists hate England, its flag, its accomplishments and the very idea of them. So pull down the flag. Patriots say no, and continue to flag.

What can we say? The people ruling the UK effectively hate the UK. The people of the UK love it, for all its faults, and aren't about to cave in. Where will it end, civil war? Ideologically, yes, kinetically? Let's wait and see, I predict no, the Left's gonna fold in the face of massive opposition. They're astroturf mountebanks who don't carry the people.

Clubland Shoot Out

So, you ask yourself with bated breath, what's the best London club, excluding Brooks, Whites and Boodles?* Good question, best for what? General ambiance, food, architecture, location, sheer clubishness? All of those things and more, surely, come together into one harmonious whole. So what's the best? In this short post we offer up a few old favourites to compare and contrast.

The NatLib (National Liberal Club). Faded glory meets absurdly high ceilings in what some describe as the "best preserved Victorian interior in London." Perhaps it is, and it does have an outstanding terrace overlooking the Embankment Gardens where you can smoke and drink. Food? Most reasonable if fixey.

The East India Club. On St. James Square and more formal than the shockingly slack NatLib. Enjoy the American Bar, which has faux American timbers, wonder at the history of the storied Waterloo Room and enjoy an excellent Sunday lunch. No kidding, it's good.

In & Out. Once housed in grander surroundings, the fabled In & Out still ain't shabby, being housed in Nancy Astor's place on St. James Square. Congenial and well-priced bar food at the Goat Brasserie, an awesome courtyard, where you can smoke, and the place is beautiful. Very much open on the weekend.

Farmers. I love the Farmers Club. It's just a couple of addresses down from the NatLib on Whitehall Place and isn't grand architecturally. But it is well put together in a country house kind of way, has rooms, delicious food and a great if small terrace where you can watch the NatLib yahoos whoop it up 500 yards away. Book a room while you can, they're in demand.

Reform. Fabled site of around the world in so many days, Reform's a cut above, with beautiful architecture, delicious food and a perfect garden which it shares with the Trav and Athenaeum. It also has rooms, which is great but... Madonna filmed there. I asked a member, "Didn't Madonna film here?" And she looked at me, "Hardly our finest moment."

So what's the best Club, who wins the shootout? It all depends, because they're all good in their various ways. But let's hold fire, Team LSP is visiting the UK in September where we'll put these establishments, and several more, to the acid test.

Rus in Urbe,

LSP

*I used to love Boodles but that's another episode.

Deranged Hippies Meet Savage

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller was furiously heckled by deranged white Marxist hippies as he visited Union Station in DC to congratulate National Guard troops for doing their part to restore order to the nation's crime infested capital. His reply was savage, check it out:

Good work, Commies. Behold yourselves defending the carjackings, murders, rapes and crime which have made DC yet another American urban hellhole run by Democrats. Great platform to campaign on and what grievous hypocrisy; it's almost as though they don't care about the black crime that's terrorizing black communities.

Of course it doesn't have to be that way. Since federalization DC crime's way down. Huh, how very Fascist, and what a mystery, how could enforcing the law amount to more law and order? Yes, magnum mysterium. I say again, it's as though DC's leftist rulers don't actually care about the people they putatively govern. Perhaps they're only in it for the cash and power as their city falls down around them.

Seems like a stop of sorts has been put to that and who knows, maybe the DC experiment will spread to other American cities. Yes please. In the meanwhile, the hippies need to go home, regroup and emigrate to San Francisco and Austin, where they can be... kettled.

Just Chilling

Surely, LSP, which hardly sounds like a real name, you mean 'baking'" Well you have a point, it's ridiculously hot here in the great state of Texas because of climate change. That's right, we've moved from balmy July to oven-hot August. So what to do?

The same old thing, not unlike Wellington at Waterloo, when you think on it. Get up, drink strong coffee on the back deck, say Morning Prayer 1928 style, wash up and then take the dog for a constitutional. Sometimes that means a walk to the Pick 'n Steal, today it meant fallow ground behind the Compound.

What was this green space? Something to do with a hospital, I think, now it's a field. Why, we ask ourselves, is it not a communal pool? Good question. Green field dog run complete, amble over to Craig Street and enjoy the shade of some old oaks while you look at what was once a house. The place was demolished last year and lies empty, reclaimed by nature.

A parable for our declining civilization? Perhaps, but don't get too excited, people are moving here from Dallas, Alberta and California because property's still comparatively cheap, which means it won't be in a year or so. Still, reflect on this: Our town numbered some 20,000 souls well into the 1950s, it's around a third of that now. Sic transit, eh? Don't say ancient Rome.

EL SENOR

In other news, El Senor scored a major PR victory in his war against war; behold all those European, vassals leaders, sitting in the Office. Will it bring peace? Dunno, above my pay grade, but a reverse Kissinger alliance with Russia against China would be interesting, don't you think? And let's get back all those billions we've spent on Biden's war at taxpayer expense.

That in mind, sorry UK, better get in line and while you're at it, stop putting people in prison for Wrong Think, you Stasi mountebanks.

Cheers,

Operation Raise The Colours

It's the strangest thing, all over the UK patriots are putting up flags.

Akkad comments:

Right on, Sargon, but here's the thing. The Left hates England, its culture and heritage, to say nothing of its religion, and wants to destroy it, they're nihilists at heart. Hence their alliance with Moslems. To say nothing of that old leftist canard, import the votes.

The Brits? Maybe they're suffering from multiculti fatigue, so wave the flag of St. George. That said, boys, you'll note that flag's cruciform, it's Christian. Reclaim that, reclaim your identity and free yourselves from your rainbow, globalist, elite, antichrist rulers.

Will it end in a fight? Let's see.

Raise The Colours,

Get Rid Of The Dam Unicorn

Do you support this? Yes, yes we do. Then there's what used to be called Great Britain, where a DEI Moslem's been busted for assault, bodily harm and all of that.

Good luck, Mohammad Aziz, and what can we say, chant, and sing? DIVERSITY IS OUR STRENGTH. Better believe it.

Listen Up France And Everywhere Else

This isn't a Frenchy blog; we're not Francophiles here at the Compound. On the contrary, we enjoy pre-lunch drinks in the Waterloo Room of the East India Club, that's us. But perhaps Marine LePen has a point and a good one?

Could it possibly be that Leftist suicidal empathy is meeting it's match? In France? Well it better had do or there won't be anything left but a Caliphate and  Hijabs all 'round.

Waterloo Room

Who knows, will Lutherans, Anglicans, Presbyterians and Roman Catholics wake up in defense of the Faith and its very current threat, or will they kowtow to Islam like the rainbow apostate Marxists they are.

Your Call,

LSP

The Assumption

Today's the great Feast of the Assumption, which is typically ignored or hated by protestants because they think it idolatry. Here at the Compound we think it a singular devotion appropriate to the Mother of God, Mary Most Holy, the House of Gold. Here:

Deus, qui virginálem aulam beátæ Maríæ, in qua habitáres, elígere dignátus es: da, quǽsumus; ut, sua nos defensióne munitos, jucúndos fácias suæ intéresse festivitáti: Qui vivis et regnas, cum Deo Patre in unitáte Spíritus Sancti, Deus, per ómnia sǽcula sæculórum."

Roughly translated by AI:

O God, Who chose the virginal dwelling of the blessed Mary to be Your abode, grant, we beseech You, that, defended by her protection, You may make us joyful to participate in her festival. Who lives and reigns with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

In other news, it's VJ Day and a friend went to the Cenotaph in London to mark it. Well done him, but he was one of a small handful to honor our forgotten army. Bad show, quondam Great Britain.

Best,

LSP

It Rained

Yes, at last, it rained. What. Bliss. Of course if you lived in Ireland or, say, Aberystwth, it wouldn't be such a big deal but here in Texas it is. The heavens opened, lightning cracked down, thunder rolled and all was good on the porch of the Compound.

In related news, Texas Democrats  are being redistricted out of existence. Could this gentle rain be their liberal tears, flowing from the rainbow heavens? Such sweet tears.

Your Gun Rights Pal,

Dark Star

Dark Star. All hail.

See you at the Farmers' Club,

PS. Farmers is unpretentious, well put together and a perfect location; members are the right stuff and you can't go wrong there. At least that's what I think. If you're planning a Whitehall gettaway, check it out. Seriously.

Everything's Just Fine - UK, We're Looking At You

Everything's just fine in the Sceptered Isle, which is why this Coinbase ad was banned from the UK's national networks. Almost as though they think the country's serf-peasant class weren't able to watch it on the internet. Here, have a look:

Sometimes, dear friends, it's better in song. On topic, do you remember a time when we used to accuse the Soviets, rightly, of banning free speech and dissent?

Dogging

Just another day at the Compound. Go downstairs and there's a dog sleeping on the sofa, another dog's waiting on the landing, and lo and behold, there's an adorable puppy on your front porch. What to do? Abandon the pup as he starts to cry by your corner ferns? Allow the poor little creature to be gerrymandered outta existence like a Democrat fraud?

No, take the pup in, heal its wounds, clean out its fleas, watch it mewl and nip in its adorable way and then pass it on to animal services in Hillsboro Texas. "Dam, that's a pretty puppy. Here's what they do, throw 'em off on the corner of your yard."

he died of cuteness

Yeah they do, and that's too bad. The other option's this: throw out your unwanted dog in the country and drive off. Watch, or don't watch, as that dog packs up and starts to attack lambs, calves and all of that. Then behold the farmers who shoot that dog.

I did that once. A gang of Chows had packed up east of I35, threatening livestock and human beings. "LSP, you got a rifle? Gotta shoot some Chows." So we sallied forth, rifles in hand, against the Chow menace. Result? No Chows, someone had shot them the day before.

brave pup

Point being, DO NOT drop your dog off as though it were some kind of trash. Not acceptable. Here at the Compound we do rescues but can only take so many in. Take note. We're also armed to the teeth.

Your Best Friend,

LSP
