Wash Out!

My youngest son, who's visiting from Canada, wanted to go for a shoot today and who can blame him. It sounded good to me too and the plan was to load up on clays, shotgun ammo, some .45 and head out into the wilderness for fun and adventure. Then it started to rain and didn't stop, it was like Wales, maybe Aberystwyth.

But the living room was dry, fortunately, and we looked out of its windows at the watery apocalypse. "Son, this isn't shooting weather." He agreed and I nodded grimly as the varied detritus of modern life flowed past the Compound, "That's an excellent point. Let's go to Karen's and get some food."

So we hydroplaned to Karen's Authentic Mexican Food in Itasca and bought a bag of bean and brisket burritos. Then we hydroplaned back and ate those bad boys like they were going out of fashion, which they're not because they're so tasty. Good work, Karen, you did it again.

The guns got a look-in too. Sure, maybe you don't want to shoot in the deluge but you can always clean the little blasters, which is what I did. Meanwhile, boy and dog amused themselves while the rain poured down.

They say, interestingly, that enough rain falls in Texas to keep the average house in water for a year. Of course this figure might be skewed by the population boom in the Lone Star Sate as people flee Illinois, California and associated workers' paradises for our sunny southern weather.

Gun rights,

  1. Both your boys are able to scare the life out of a brisket burrito without firing a shot. Such is the nature of young warrior cadets in the Dallas Light Cavalry (irregular) (dismounted) and their loyal friend, Blue Devastator. Who wants to pick bird shot out of a delicious brisket burrito. Their tacos are also quite good. And if you can eat one, two go down just as nicely.

  2. Clearly, the day was not a loss.

But is that puppy dog having a good time? Poor thing looks a bit alarmed.

  3. LL, I thought of you as we motored to Karen's. What good scoff!

  4. He does a bit, AOW... but note the K9 smile. All was well!

  5. The nice thing about Blue Agitator is that his good will can be bought with a brisket burrito, fried chicken, a medium rare steak or a cherry fried pie. Come to think of it, I'm not all that much different than the blue dog...

  6. AOW - That's how cray-cray Blue Terminator always looks. However, he gave me my first snort of a laugh this morning.

Those are clearly very good tortillas Karen makes to wrap around all things delicious.

    Sorry you were rained out.

  7. Foul weather doesn't stop some of us. Despite gloomy skies and temperatures in the low 20s we opened the range New Year's Day and had a steady flow of shooters in spite of it all. I was glad to have my layers.

  8. At least Flying Smurf is still blue, not brown, from all the mud! My #KeepTexasRed needs toweling off after every time he goes out, as he just runs thru it, no worries, Mate! He's showing *some* smarts, washing off most of it walking thru their kiddie pool, before coming inside.

Texas has definitely been soggy of late. My corner had it's record two rainiest years back-to-back, 88 inches last year, 100+ the year before, thanks to Harvey. If the first three days of this year set the pattern, I'm gonna give more serious thought to investing in a fiberglass or plastic "jungle stock" for my SKS.

  10. Cool Dog !

I like rain at night as if it is God's sprinkler system.

  11. It IS Aberystwyth!
I hope you're both having a wonderful time despite the floods. Having lived long and hard in England it's something you should be used to. Get your brolly out, lad.

  12. I know, Jules. The only thing lacking is Pier Pressure and for sure, break out the umbrella and the Zodiak and head upstream to the nearest pub. Oh. We don't have those, dammit.

  13. He's been a good dog, Kid. Turned up on the porch years ago and wouldn't leave, so I took him in. Ferocious little thing.

    Excellent sprinkler point!

  15. Glad #KeepTexasRed's doing well. Blue's pretty much blind now but doesn't seem to care, if anything it's made him more playful, interestingly.

And yes, what a lot of rain. Ferocious downpour.

  16. Jim, you're made of tough stuff! But the weather's cleared now so I feel a range day coming on.

  17. He doesn't get any less ridiculous, Adrienne... and I have to say, those tortillas are good!

  18. LL, he wanted some bean and brisket. And who can blame him?

  19. I just hope you're going to send your kids to Sewanee, where they'll be properly episcopaled! Chapel twice every day (preferedly at dawn and dusk), Advanced Latin, advanced physics, advanced chemistry, advanced mathematics, no alcoholic beverages, retarded social life, and chewing tobacco only as a penance.

And remember that St. Basil the Great abhorred both secret eating and gluttony.
