Churches I Like

Back in the '90s I loved going to St. Ethedreda's (off of Leather Lane in London) because it was a beautifully restored medieval church, the liturgy wasn't the usual modernist rubbish, it had decent polyphany and if you were lucky you got to hear Fr. Charles-Roux preach - mostly about the Divine Right of Kings and Marie Antoinette. Always a captivating delivery, to say nothing of a singular theme; Fr. Roux went on to be a sort of unofficial chaplain to 'The Passion of the Christ', saying Mass on set for actors and crew.

After Mass you could go to The Old Mitre, which looked pleasantly Dickensian but had been corporatised and ruined inside, or more sensibly there were the various pubs on Lamb's Conduit Street. Great part of London, I always think.

Speaking of which, you might be interested in the hypocritical, sleazy, self-serving, failed Labour attempt to smear England's top soldier. He's come out well, others less so; I like G.O.T's reporting and the All Seeing Eye.

Deo Gratias.

  2. My Mrs. and I love old churches, although our definition of "old" is probably different from what you're used to :)

My Wife does stained glass as a hobby, during the cooler months. Its hard for her pass up the chance to snap pictures from inside a church with nice glass.

I'm a bit partial to it myself. One of my photographs from inside a church in Tulsa, Oklahoma is going to appear on the cover of a book on the Episcopal Church that is being published this fall.

  3. Even as an atheist, I love churches. Possibly for the history and majesty which lack in today's pagan wasteland.

One is tempted to say that belief is a wonderful thing ... until one realises that such could include "climate change".

  4. Hope the book goes well Paladin!

"Pagan wasteland" has a certain ring to it and what better 'belief system' to go along with that than ecopantheism? Thanks Fausty.

  5. And Sir Richard Dannatt beats the smear campaign by publishing his expenses - brilliant! Those Labour troughers seem to think that everyone behaves in the same corrupt manner that THEY do! Well they found out the hard way that it's not the case - this may yet come back to bite them!

  6. I sure hope so - Kevan, Foulkes & Trougher really deserve it. And another thing - why has the Army been cut while we're at war? Grrr.

  7. I have always liked old country churches, perhaps because as a child that is what I attended.
