Rodeo

Yesterday was a big day. Great shooting enjoyment in the morning and then evening rodeo in Waco.

OK, it's no fun to drive to Waco but the Extraco venue's a great place to see the event, far better than a massive stadium because you're closer to the action, especially with a ringside view.

Good, too, to be with some of the people who organize the competition, which makes everything more personal. But regardless, I like the excitement of the thing.

So much suspense: will she make that barrel, will he get stomped by a raging bull? Why is that USMC veteran a rodeo clown? How long will he stay on the ferociously bucking horse and will he die if he's thrown off into the arena? And so on.

I tell you, adrenaline's up and at it. And guess what, none of the people there took a knee for the national anthem. They're patriots who do not disrespect the flag. The PRA's very different to, say, the NFL or the NBA and thank God for it.

All that in mind and more, what a great night out. When I got back to the bucolic haven that is this small rural farming community, my eldest called in from Korea.

"Hey, dad, what's up?" I told him and learned that he 's fine and enjoying army life. Thank God. But exactly what this entails is a bit of a mystery because he steadfastly refuses to send photos of anything beyond being in the "motor pool." Though I've been told beaches are involved. Hmmm.

Therein lies another post.

Ride on,

LSP

  1. I've been around rodeo all my life. Relatives, co-workers, employers, etc. Did some in my youth and stopped because I was never going to be good.

    1. It's pretty new to me, WSF, something I got into since moving to Texas. A few of the church people are big in the sport and generously give tickets. Nice.

  2. That sounds like a lot of fun. What better to do on a Saturday than go to a rodeo. In Texas, with indoor arenas, you see a lot of that action year round. Here in AZ they are held in the summer outdoors in blazing heat.

    1. Great fun, LL, and Extraco's a neat arena. Better, I think, than those huge stadiums.

Outdoor events are good too. Blazing sun? Not so much...

  3. You've turned into quite the party animal, LSP. I'm jealous! Managed to go to a few prison rodeos in Huntsville before they shut it down in 1986. And who doesn't love the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo?

    1. The Huntsville rodeos were famous, Adrienne! And the Houston event's big fun.

At this rodeo, you had to wear a muzzle to get in then you could take it off.

      Science.

  4. Rodeos are the heart of the southwest. Truly Americana... Let's just hope we don't have the 'other' rodeo come Nov 4th.

  5. NFO, I have a strong feeling Satan's rodeo will be in full formation on the 4th. But hey, let's see.

When you're a lifer, you're a bit more risky in your behavior. Nothing much to lose. Heh!

  7. Fast and furious action, Adrienne! Curiously, Jimmy Munroe, who I was with the other night, used to know the warden who organized those rodeos. Apparently Hunstville was self-sustaining then and he was a good man. Interesting.
