Here's the thing, readers, all five of you, I think I need to get a new rig. Don't get me wrong, this one's been great. Thanks, Ford and Oncor for an awesome vehicle. But it's coming to that put money into it end.
So, a new rig. I want something that's able to get in and out of the mud at the range and everywhere else besides, that likes dirt roads in the rain, has the wherewithal to deal with horses and all of that.
I'm thinking a RAPTOR would do the trick. Or maybe a fleet 4x4? OK, a Raptor would be cool, no doubt about it, but a regular work truck 4x4 would get the job done and still be cool, with far less things to go wrong. Like electric windows?
Also, a fleet 4x4 would cost appx $10/20k less, leaving plenty of room to buy a BOAT.
What's it to be, a RAPTOR or a FLEET 4x4, BOAT included?
Help, please, and don't fear the reaper,
LSP
Sold trucks for nearly 30 years and have always been partial to Fords. That said, I would take a hard look at what Nissan offers. They still build solid on frame trucks with proven dependable engines.
ReplyDeleteBack in my used inventory management days, we spent far less getting Nissans, any model, "front line ready" than anything else except Fords.
Fleet and boat!
ReplyDeleteI'm with drjim. Fleet and boat.
ReplyDeleteI'm still reeling after looking up the price on a Raptor. Since the highest price I ever paid for a vehicle is 10K you can understand why I had to lie down with a cold cloth on my forehead.
ReplyDeleteThat being said - I'd go with the fleet and a boat.
And since I sold Nissans for a number of years, I would also take WSF's advice.
I'll raise my hand with drjim and Jim. Fleet and boat. :)
ReplyDeleteFleet and Boat. I have a Tundra w/SR5 pkg. Like it and it's # 4 on the top 10 list of American built parts and labor. The F150 is #1. Tundra with the 5.7 liter gets 13.1 mpg. A little low. Don't know what the Fords get.
ReplyDeletebtw - there are only 2 'American' vehicles on the top 10 list F150 and Corvette is #10. All rest are 'foreign' cars or trucks.
Raptor. OR you'll just have Raptor envy.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the advice, WSF. I've had years of use out of the F150 with very little to complain about, so I'm inclined towards another, but I'll check Nissan.
ReplyDeletedrjim, that's my plan, I think it makes more sense with more bang for the buck to boot.
ReplyDeleteJim, I think that's the way forward too.
ReplyDeleteRaptors aren't cheap, Adrienne! Mind you, the price goes down used. Still, it has to be fleet unless the WHITE WOLF donates his to the church after he gets a Pinzgauer or a Mog.
ReplyDeleteInteresting Nissan point.
Linda, there's a clear consensus on this!
ReplyDeleteI like the Tundras, Kid, pretty serious stuff. 13 mpg is kind of low though, the F150 is more like 18, which isn't too bad.Only two? That's not so good.
ReplyDeleteBoth suxx, get a Prius. 13.1 mpg to fetch the occasional pack of fags and drive you and your dog to the Walmart? U may vey well rot in hell LSP, as much for bad taste as bad judgement, and u will if Tay-hass becomes the new dust-bowl as the planet peaks out. As alws, with sincerity, g
ReplyDeleteHad a Tundra, great truck, God awful mileage. Good power, though; 5.7L V8, loved it. Did not love the mileage: 11mph approx. When towing my RV, at times got 1.6 mpg (up hills).
ReplyDeleteHad lots of Ford F150's, can't go wrong. Currently have an Ecoboost V6; great power, and when not towing, 17 mpg.
Boats: remember what I said about buying a boat, Pastor. They are evil personified.
LSP, the Raptor is 5 years old and I just turned 40K miles. So it's sort of a teenager as truck age goes. It's not ready to leave home yet.
ReplyDeleteGL, as always, thanks for the comment but I'm confused.
ReplyDeleteYou seem to be saying that I shouldn't get a Ford pickup and suggest I drive a Prius instead. But you drive a Ford pickup, I know, I've been in it. Are recommending "do as I say, not as I do" or have you simply forgotten about your truck, perhaps you mislaid it somewhere in Detroit? This is unclear.
Then there's the dust bowl. You appear to be saying that F series Ford pickups will turn Texas into a kind of lesser Sahara, but how? How will the "One Fiddys" cause planetary peak-out and our fertile Texan topsoil to become dust? This too is unclear.
It's dangerous to assume but I'll wager my fighting monkey against any three of your Cass Cafe wimmyn that you're talking climate change. If so, you should remember that anthropogenic global warming makes the climate COLDER. Texas will become an ice sheet, not a dust bowl. Of course a RAPTOR or FLEET 4x4 would be useful in either scenario.
Clarity, please.
My Ranger, trusty beast, is a modest four banger. Hardly a "truck" by the current standards of the overblown auto industry, it gets pretty much the same gas mileage as my civic, which is what I use when I'm not fetching building supplies from the Home Depot. I'll admit I've made one untenable remark and that's regarding the Prius. They're diabolically ugly and should be banned on that alone. I'm glad we're finally agreeing that anthropogenic effects are taking place on everything else however.
DeleteFredd, I've been really pleased with mine and I'll be getting another. A boat? I really hate to say it but wisdom seems to dictate TWO things.
ReplyDelete1. Use other people's boats. After all, they're usually looking for fishing company and you don't have to worry about the cost of upkeep and all the rest.
2. Get a Fleet 150 instead of a Raptor. A lot cheaper and it'd work and work well.
I don't really like either of these options because I'd like a BOAT and a RAPTOR, obviously. But wisdom must prevail. So there it is.
LL, I have to agree because the RAPTOR's a better truck and I know your generous spirit. But I understand, you need that rig at the Mine.
ReplyDeleteThat said, team consensus says FLEET. For now...
Heh. The Prius. Not aboutto buy into that one, GL. Mind you, I drove KPH's '08 Civic to Calgary from TX and enjoyed it, until I hit a deer on the, ahem, Deerfoot Trail. Think how much better an outcome it would've been if I'd been driving my rig.
ReplyDeleteThe best thing about global warming is the way it makes everything colder. A bit like taxes, which as everyone knows make you richer.
Let's see that construction finished, please.
LSP, especially useful for the coming ice age that will cover Texas in a sheet of Ice and Snow would be those track sets that replace the wheels, so you can go 4X4 on treads!
ReplyDeleteBeans, forgive the late reply.
ReplyDeleteEXCELLENT POINT.
