Here's part of FDR's D Day prayer.
And, O Lord, give us Faith. Give us Faith in Thee; Faith in our sons; Faith in each other; Faith in our united crusade. Let not the keenness of our spirit ever be dulled. Let not the impacts of temporary events, of temporal matters of but fleeting moment let not these deter us in our unconquerable purpose.
With Thy blessing, we shall prevail over the unholy forces of our enemy. Help us to conquer the apostles of greed and racial arrogancies. Lead us to the saving of our country, and with our sister Nations into a world unity that will spell a sure peace a peace invulnerable to the schemings of unworthy men. And a peace that will let all of men live in freedom, reaping the just rewards of their honest toil.
Thy will be done, Almighty God.
Amen.
Whatever you think of FDR, I'd say that it's almost inconceivable that a US President would make that kind of prayer today, in fact it might even be illegal.
Respect to those who gave their lives, may they rest in peace.

I think that it is far more likely we'd have Barack assume the role of a muezzin, calling the faithful to prayer.
ReplyDeleteAnd respect to those that came through it all after the ferocity of battle and of injury. Not for them the niceties of counselling for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, they were just left to cope best they could. My pa was one of them. Vive la resistance!! Vive la France!! And God Bless America where he lived out his postwar life, and which he loved more even than his mother country.
ReplyDeleteI don't think he's known for his strong Christian beliefs, LL...
ReplyDeleteI'd forgotten that part of your family history, Lukeya. Quite a generation, to put it mildly.
ReplyDeleteMay we never forget their sacrifices.
