Patriotism, true love of Patria, begins at home, not with abstract bi-coastal Harvard inspired imagination but with love of where you actually are, the one you're with, your family, village, town, city and on. Chesterton expounds:

Go back to the darkest roots of civilization and you will find them knotted round some sacred stone or encircling some sacred well. People first paid honour to a spot and afterwards gained glory for it. Men did not love Rome because she was great. She was great because they had loved her.

Powerful Prayers From Moscow

Patriarch Kirill of Moscow has approved the following prayers for inclusion in the Litany of Fervent Supplication. Via Anglican Ink:

Again we pray unto Thee, O Lord our God, for the mercy and salvation from the disastrous epidemic coming onto us, for the deliverance of Thy faithful people from spiritual and bodily death, for the healing and health of the diseased and for Thy divine protection and help, we pray unto Thee, O merciful Lord, hearken soon and have mercy.

Again we pray for the pacification of confusion and every fear among people, for the protection of Thy faithful by firm faith, for filling our hearts with peace and quietness, we pray unto Thee, O Lord, hearken and have mercy.

O Lord our God, enter not into judgment with Thy servants and save us from the disastrous epidemic coming onto us. Have mercy on us, Thy lowly and unworthy servants who in repentance, with fervent faith and broken heart, prostrate ourselves before Thee, O God, merciful and ordaining every good change, and trust in Thy mercy.

For Thy property it is to show mercy and to save us, O our God, and unto Thee do we send up glory, to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

The Miracle of The Widow of Nain

There's been a momentary lull in the War on Weather, giving us all time to reflect on the miracle of the widow of Nain, which is the Gospel reading for Sunday. In it we find two processions.

One is a procession of death, led by the grieving widow who has lost her only son. The other is a procession of life, led by Christ. At the point of contact, Christ is moved with great compassion and love. "Weep not," he tells the woman, and in power summons the son's soul back to his body and restores him to life. 

The widow and her son are, of course, types or figures of ourselves and the Church who are met, loved and given life by Christ. I found this reflection helpful, here's the conclusion:

The story of the widow of Nain is a wonderful story. It reminds us that the Gospel, like the Christian life itself, is seamless and perfect. The demands made on us are no less than the demands of love and of faith. As the Apostle John said, God is indeed love. And He responds to us, to the Church, as we in faith and in love cry out to him. For ourselves, for each other. For the living; for the dead; for the entire world. We cry out for mercy and for love and always – always – God responds. It is for this – faith and love – that we will be held accountable at the dread judgment seat. Nothing else. Not buildings, not numbers, not visible success. Faith and love. This is our life in the Church, it is our life in Christ.

Ukraine Magic

The news cycle moves pretty quickly these days, so perhaps everyone has forgotten about the civil war in the Ukraine. But amnesia aside, things haven't gone too well for Western backed Kiev forces, in their fight against pro-Russian separatist districts.

In Debaltsevo alone, separatists captured 450 heavy weapons, 200 pieces of armor and 60 tanks during fighting in January and February. However, this streak of George Soros funded bad luck may be about to change.

Typical Ukrainian Shamans

Some 2000 wizards, witches, shamans and warlocks gathered in Kiev today to hold a magic ritual for peace in the troubled country and to cast spells on amulets and charms for nationalist fighters.

Sergey Grechishkin, a self-styled magician, who calls himself Sabirius and a "master of the primary circle," described the purpose of the ritual as an "appeal to higher forces."

Charging Up

Protective amulets for the warriors? That worked well for the Sioux and the Mau Mau.

Putin's Not Gay

All-round hard man, former KGB officer and ruler of Russia, Vladimir Putin has struck another blow for traditional values by banning gay couples from adopting Russian children.

According to Reuters, the decision to ban gay adoptions comes after an American lesbian entered into a legal feud with her estranged partner over Russian orphan Yegor Shabatalov. The Russian Foreign Ministry plans to evaluate possible "psychological damage" inflicted on the unfortunate orphan. 

Patriarchs say don't be gay

Unlike Putin, President Obama believes that children should be adopted by gay men and lesbians and Time magazine praised him as America's first gay President.
