We Out Like Taliban

After a strangely peaceful Indian summer lull of a few weeks, it seems that America's back to normal, with terrorist attacks that aren't terrorist attacks committed by a Muslim who isn't a Muslim, and a race riot that isn't a race riot cooking off in Charlotte.

"We out like Taliban!" shouted one rioter. No, you're not out like Taliban, you're out like a crew of out of control, ghetto thugs looking for the nearest Walmart to loot. And it looks like they found one.

A Typical Taliban With a Looted Daisy Red Rider BB Gun

As one noted ironist observed, "Walmart looted of flat screens and iPads? #Justice." The cause of the shooting? A black man with a gun was shot by a black policeman with a gun. Which black life mattered most?

You decide.

Backyard Blasters

It's important to keep your shooting skills honed, so it makes sense to set up a range in your back yard, a BB gun range.

Hours of fun and the ammo is cheap. Just be careful that your Blue Heeler doesn't try and eat the speeding BBs in mid-air...

Cheers,

Easy There, Cowboy! Tortillas?

You don't have to eat all of your delicious Mexican breakfast of Huevos Rancheros, although it's hard not to. No, sometimes you can leave the tortillas and take them home for later, which is what we did this morning.

I was looking forward to those tortillas, so imagine my surprise to find the elder, and supposedly more responsible, recruit stretched out on his rack with  a Kindle Fire and a white, polystyrene box.

Tortillas?

"Did you eat all the tortillas?" I asked quietly, with a certain degree of menace, while looking at the white box. "Er, yes."
"Tell me, if you're living with other people, is it better to be more considerate, or less considerate?"
"More considerate."
"So. Is it more, or less considerate, to eat the house supply of tortillas?"
"Less considerate."
"Correct. I'm relieved to find your logic circuits still working, despite their momentary lapse."

Go On, Drink Some Water

Sheepish tortilla grins over and forgiveness issued, I discovered the youngest recruit hunting for squirrels in the back yard, with a Daisy. Maybe he'll beat the opposition and we can eat some squirrel.

Rounds down range,

Range Warriors

Just because it's hot doesn't mean that you can't shoot, so I've been taking the young 'uns, 12 and 9,  to my friend's range for target practice, but not before a decent work out on a Daisy BB gun. The Daisy's useful because you can shoot it in the back yard and teach basic marksmanship skills, not least safety, while having fun.

sizing up the opposition

The boys did well on that and well on the range, shooting .22 bolt action, .22 semi (Ruger 10/22), an AR 15, my philisophical friend GWB's Mini 14, and some .45 (Beretta PX4).

the old contender

We fired from the bench, kneeling, prone and off-hand at 100, 50 and 25 yards. It was good to see the kids getting on target at the longer ranges, especially off-hand; just a lot of fun for them and a fairly full-on introduction to firearms.

Important skill, shooting. Start 'em off young.

on at 100

Skeet tomorrow, have to warm up for Dove season.

Shoot straight,
