Trump Uber Alles

Donald Trump filled Dallas' American Airlines stadium yesterday with 20,000 people to rapturous applause. His rise to GOP front-runner has been meteoric and no wonder, he says all the right things and he says them forcefully.

Like, Hillary Clinton was the worst Secretary of State ever, or, make America great again and make its people rich; end the kind of crony politics that puts self-serving inside-the-Beltway amateurs in charge of affairs of state; make illegal immigration actually illegal; honor veterans, stamp out gangs; put an end to allowing America to be treated like some kind of patsy by the rest of the world, especially China.

The list goes on and it's popular, no doubt about it. No other Republican candidate has the kind of mass appeal that Trump has, and that's rattled the GOP establishment. According to Mark Halperin there are several lines of attack to bring the Trumpian Juggernaut down. Viz:

Trump can’t be trusted because he is an egomaniac with a
    bad character.
Trump is a liberal and unprincipled.
Trump is not close to being fit to be a serious president or
    commander-in-chief.
    Trump is a politician, not a businessman/outsider.

That's Halperin, writing for Bloomberg, and I'd say he pretty much sums it up. There's another line, though, and it's this. "If Trump wins, the Left will be laughing at us until the next millennium." Maybe, it might also be the case that Trump is a demented shark, but he's evidently a shark that appeals to Americans after what seems like centuries of Euro-Communist rule in Obama's White House.

I think he has a chance at the Presidency, especially if there's a financial meltdown in 2016.

Does that mean we've devolved as a nation?

Better Trump than Hillary.

Trump has DONE something. Hillary was a parasite clinging to husband, Bill. Then she dropped off that host and is trying to get elected because she feels ENTITLED to do so.

She cites her plumbing as the differentiating factor and crows that she's the only female candidate. I find it interesting how dismissive she can be of Carly Fiorina.

There is a rumor of a Donald Trump/Mark Cuban ticket. That would be VERY interesting.

I believe Trump's stance on the Planned Parenthood disaster is to do nothing. Unacceptable, and yet, unsurprising; he's a man motivated by greed.
I've never reduced an election to a singular issue, and I won't now-- but I do think this is a really huge, huge issue. The gov is funding an organization that is willfully breaking the laws of the government, and doing so via the most revolting atrocities imaginable. But as a society, we're so numb to the horror that people are, for the most part, ignoring it. We're all going to hell in a hand basket if we don't elect a leader that has SOME SEMBLANCE of moral fibre...

My general litmus test for candidates is, do they respect my right to own any firearm I want? If so, then they usually will respect and protect the rest of my rights and interests as a citizen. If not, well...

On the O'Reilly Factor, Trump said that we must completely fund Planned Parenthood in light of the disclosures of their barbaric (and Satanic) practices.

I'm not taking a position on Trump, but agree completely with Jenny on PP, and what must be done.

I agree with the PP point -- they're heinous. Trump? He's certainly a phenomenon... a bit like an aggressive demagogue version of Pompeius Magnus. Would he erect statues of himself, if elected? Large ones? Towering into the sky? Possible.

I found it remarkable that 20K people stood in line for hours to see him. But, that's just me. I wouldn't stand in line for hours to see anyone (well, maybe LSP.)

Planning a debate party for this evening since Jindal (who's he?), Rand Paul (who wears a squirrel on his head), and some of the others have vowed to dump on Trump. They need to grow up.

Trump backtracked in a shallow fashion on the O'Reilly show, saying he would defund PP and that he "never said" he would continue support. But I don't trust that, not least because it's a blatant lie. Look at his interviews from August, and his long-time stance has been adamantly pro-choice. He also thinks his sister, who is a federal judge and in favor of partial birth abortions (!), would make a "phenomenal" Supreme Court Justice. His proven stance has been to defend the "good aspects" of PP, and continue funding for those. Law already prevents PP from using tax-payer dollars for abortions, supposedly, so in essence, he supports the status quo.
His "I never said that" lie on O'Reilly is hardly a convincing change in his stance...
I'm not sure this guy is anything more than an Obama for Republicans. Lot of flashy rhetoric...

I found it kind of remarkable too, Adrienne. I'll be curious to see how successful they are in their "dump."

He's certainly a rhetorician, Jenny. I wasn't aware of the sister aspect...
