Tom Wolfe, Literary Genius or Southern Fop?

I like reading Tom Wolfe's books, and what's not to like? He can write with a laser-like accuracy that's as enjoyable as it's at times disturbing, which leads some to rate him as a latter-day American Dickens or Dostoyevsky.

I'm sure Wolfe would modestly dispute such claims and with that in mind, I once asked a woman of the South if she liked the famous author.

"Mr. Wolfe," she exclaimed, "is a Southern Fop."

She may well have had a point. Here's Tom Wolfe on Hunter Thompson, who he thinks may have been the "great comic writer of the 20th century."

Most good writers and good artists are eccentric. Wolfe is clearly a fop but where does it say that a fop can't write well?

Very good point.

I totally agree with Larry.

I'd argue that Tom Wolfe is a great writer, although I find that his novels don't end as well they promise to do. But maybe that's just me.

I'm not a big fan of Wolfe. I don't think it has anything to do with his wardrobe, but I can't help but think that he'd write better if he wore camo, owned a blue dog and went hunting now and again.

I agree, but then again I'm biased...

Off on a "bobcat hunt" this evening. Looking forward to that.

When I come down your way for the big DLC dinner, we must plan a varmint hunt. Set me aside something to shoot since the airlines raise holy hell.

For sure.
