Scouting Coyotes

Scout the Farm

A parishioner's farm has been terrorized by coyotes lately, (they killed a cow) so I went to scout out the problem and see where the dogs were running.

Coyote Crossing

It was a beautiful day to walk the fencelines and sure enough, the coyotes had worn a path through the bank of a creek. A kind of coyote highway to rabbits, mice, chickens, goats and cows.

Tracks

I figured that might be a good area to setup and call; a safe place to take a shot and obviously visited by the offenders. If that didn't work, I could fall back 100 or so yards to a copse on high ground and try from there.

Then it was back to the truck via a turtle shell, Polled Herefords and some chickens.

Polled Herefords

Great to get out in the field and remember, 2014 is the Year of the Gun.

Cheers,

LSP

Coyote free fire zone Padre - I think so. Get gunnin'!!! ( In a totally ecumenical way, of course.)

They're a right menace around here, Lukeya. So far it's LSP 0, Coyotes 1, but that will change....

Some of my farmer parishioners in SW Ontario kept llamas to protect their livestock from coyotes. Anyone your way do that?

Dr. Dee, I understand you're in the trapping business -- by weight!

I'll obviously have to invest in some of that.

Cheers.

Haven't heard of the Llama defense, Michael; they mostly rely on snares and dogs here -- with pretty limited effect.

A century ago in the South, maybe the North too, they used to call coyotes "wolves" and would hunt them with dogs. Curious.

God bless.

Some friends in Jacksboro keep donkeys AND llamas to protect their livestock from coyotes. They're convinced the donkeys work harder. Just FYI.

My friends in Jack County employ donkeys to protect their livestock. They're convinced they're more effective than llamas:

(No, I do not sell donkeys.)

Alright there Mel. Interesting llama/donkey reference. Come to think of it -- I heard some donkeys the other night when we were calling near the creek.

Maybe they were defense donkeys...

Thanks for the link.
